With the exhibition Ladies First! the Neue Galerie Graz undertook an attempt in 2020/21 at a historical snapshot of local women artists from 1850 to 1950. The title of the follow-up exhibition ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ is also taken from the context of chivalry – while the high-sounding empty phrases are both popular and represent a provocation, they are intended to provide easy access to the subject.The exhibition, which considers the period beginning in the present day reaching back to the 1960s, is international in perspective and based on the collection at the Neue Galerie Graz.
The exhibition and collection history has resulted in differing priorities and nuances in terms of content, which, parallel to the general development, can be placed within the context of the feminism and gender debate. The fact that several ‘gentlemen’ are now mingling with the ‘ladies’ is thanks to the current discussion, as well as the specific exhibition history of the Neue Galerie Graz. In 1979, the Neue Galerie Graz, within the framework of the trigon Biennale, reacted to the so-called New Women’s Movement, in which female visual artists had been heavily involved internationally, with the exhibition masculin feminin. At the trigon ’79, however, one already followed the notions of the equality of the sexes, inviting female and male artists to participate in roughly equal measure.
Ladies and Gentlemen has now set itself the task of offering insight into essential social discourses of the last half-century to the present day – specifically, into those of feminism, gender studies and queer theory. That this undertaking must perforce remain fragmentary, making no claims to completeness whatsoever, is self-evident, given the scope and complexity of this discourse. Rather, examples of formulations are on show that shed light and comment upon the discussion, both historical and present-day. Divided into five loosely-structured themes, the exhibition shows both international and Austrian positions from different generations, some of the works being well-known, others almost forgotten today.

Luckily enough, I’ve never experienced gender-motivated violence. This thought comes to mind first. Are you sure? Isn’t commenting on someone’s looks violence? What about body shaming and catcalling? Intrusive staring? What about causing sudden tension in your whole body and making you desperately wish for the cap of invisibility? What about the fact that girls don’t feel safe when coming back home at night?
Take My Eyes is the title of Iciar Bollain’s film from 2003 (Te doy mis oyos). “Take my eyes” – says its female protagonist, striving to fix her marriage with her husband who beats and degrades her. How many times do people who stay in abusive relationships try to let bygones be bygones, deceive themselves or let themselves be deceived by tender words, by promises that things will get better, return to normal? Our advice: get a divorce, leave your partner, don’t let them push you around. But what if the abused person has nowhere to go? What about the children, what about the life we’ve lived together?
The exhibition Take My Eyes explores the problem of gender-motivated violence through the prism of works by artists who demonstrate special sensitivity in documenting reality. Many of the presented works are based on their own experiences, but their meaning goes well beyond individual trauma to tell a universal tale about fear, pain, repression, struggle for dignity. Gender-motivated violence is experienced by women, non-binary individuals and men, but because of the patriarchal social structure women are most often the victims of its various forms.
Gender-motivated violence also includes legislation by state authorities that deny or limit the right to abortion, or even reduce access to contraceptives. Deliberately ignoring or negating the phenomenon of domestic violence, violence motivated by gender or sexual orientation, femicide, refusing grants for such organisations as the Women’s Rights Centre, violating the provisions of international conventions on preventing and combating violence – all of this is happening right in front of our eyes. All these actions menace not only individuals who identify with a given gender, but also the rights of citizens in general. The approach of the state to these issues appears to be the best gauge of its attitude to civic rights and liberties. © lokal_30

In einem gemeinsam mit sixpackfilm kuratierten Special zeigen wir nach der aktuellen Folge jeweils einen Schatz aus unserem Archiv.
Die neue Reihe startet am 5. April (21:45) mit Fiona Rukschcios Dokumentarfilm <common.places 2>, in dem sich die Künstlerin mit dem derzeit leider wieder besonders aktuellen Thema „Gewalt gegen Frauen“ auseinandersetzt. Das Schöne an ihrem Film: Sie zeigt auch Frauen, die sich erfolgreich gewehrt haben. Das Gespräch dazu führt Oktoskop-Kuratorin Antonia Rahofer.

Recently, our cultural consciousness has become suffused with stories of sexual violence – women’s stories that span decades. Finally, we are listening and believing. Yet, largely careless and titillating depictions of rape and sexual violence continue to dominate — ELLE, Nocturnal Animals, Gone Girl… Unvictiming interrogates how we should (re)present sexual violence.
Bringing together largely overlooked short films on the subject, Another Gaze: A Feminist Film Journal has selected a five decades-spanning series of short films on this subject as seen by women filmmakers. From Mendieta to Campion, this selection of work will be presented in context with a post-screening discussion with Tanya Horeck, author of Public Rape: Representing Violation. 86’

Die mittwochbar konnte die renommierte und tierschutzqualifizierte Hundetrainerin und Hundeführscheinprüferin Simone Gräber von Maud und Lolo dazu gewinnen, einen spannenden Vortrag zu dem Thema „Hunde in der Stadt – Hundeführschein, eine sinnvolle Option“ zu halten. In einem anschließenden Quiz besteht die Möglichkeit, drei gratis-Antritte zur Hundeführscheinprüfung zu gewinnen! Im hektischen Treiben einer Großstadt sind unsere Hunde, egal welcher Größe, eine Vielzahl von Reizen ausgesetzt. Ein Spießrutenlauf aus Beinen, Fahrrädern, sie betatschen wollenden Händen und ständig wechselnden Artgenossen gehört zum Alltag. Der freiwillige Hundeführschein bietet HundehalterInnen in Wien nicht nur die Möglichkeit, sich einmalig 72,- Euro an Hundesteuer zu sparen, sondern vor allem, sich über ein positives Miteinander zu informieren und weiterzubilden. Philosophers have consistently and unsurprisingly both drawn inspiration from, and expressed themselves through music throughout history. As a result, it is possible to follow the arc of western thought through a beautiful and intriguing tradition of meticulously organized sound. Nestor Jankovic’s lecture will introduce the outline of this tradition by focusing on three specific historical points; the music theory of ancient Greece, the Middle ages, and 20th century Europe.

VIOLENCE ISN’T AN ISLAND
8:00 to 8:50 pm are the strict temporal guidelines for an artistic intervention facilitated by a carte blanche: As the first invited artist to the new KEX Open Material series Fiona Rukschcio will organise a soirée that not only poses questions but also tries to answer them.
Why can violence affect anybody? To what extent is structural violence inherent to prevailing systems? How can these realities be dealt with? What is life like after experiences of violence? What can civil courage achieve and what kind of strategies can be found in powerless situations? What are the artistic strategies?
Furthermore, all works by Rukschcio on the subject will be exhibited along with a look behind the scenes of #1: <common.places> and its remake. Nicole Szolga will present her film “Why she refused to act in a rapist scene”. An evening that only takes place on this day and at this time. A mixture of talk show, performance, exhibition, and fair.

The fffr-communication award was created by Fiona Rukschcio in order to distinguish exceptional achievements in the field of communication. It is awarded once every year to honor individuals or groups for ideas, initiatives or actions which came to the attention of the jury and were especially appreciated by it. The fffr-communication award is intended to form a new kind of communicating.
Der fffr-communication award wurde von Fiona Rukschcio ins Leben gerufen, um herausragende Leistungen auf dem Gebiet der Kommunikation auszuzeichnen. Er wird einmal pro Jahr verliehen und würdigt Einzelpersonen, wie auch Gruppen, Ideen, Initiativen oder Handlungen, die der Jury besonders auf- und gefallen. Der fffr-communication award soll stilbildend für eine neue Art von Kommunikation wirken. Ein Pokal und eine Originalzeichnung werden überreicht. Not only since Paris is Burning have images of make-op rituals been closley connected with the question of the dominating gender norms, because the act of putting on make-up reveals simultaneously the making of bodies. Putting on lipstick seems to directly go along with the crossing of the legs, i.e. a multitude of supposedly „female“ identifiable poses. The performative character is inherent in such images because the construction of the gender is being revealed.
In schminki 1, 2 + 3 a woman is putting on make-up. A woman, disguised as a woman, exhibits images of her own creation. The poses, respectively their identifiability, precede the images, and the aesthetic operation clarifies the construction. Rukschcio creates a parody of the prevailing norms by trying to reveal the imitative structure of gender norms. In her films, collages and projects, Fiona Rukschcio deals with the roles assigned to women, with identity construction, and with extreme emotional experiences. At the Secession, she is showing her film retaped Rape (2012) and a series of photographs documenting the making of the film, as well as photo-collages and furniture. These new works take their cue and their structure from the film Rape made by Yoko Ono and John Lennon in 1969. Rukschcio re-filmed the work, in which the cameraman pursues a young woman through London back to her apartment, recreating the same shots at the original locations, but without the woman.
Fiona Rukschcio thematisiert in ihren Filmen, Collagen und Projekten weibliche Rollenzuweisungen, fremde und eigene Identitätsentwürfe sowie emotionale Grenzerfahrungen. Indem sie Recherche- und Dokumentationsmaterialien mit ihren subjektiv aufgeladenen Wahrnehmungen kombiniert, entwickelt sie eine heterogene visuelle Sprache, in der Archivmaterial und Alltagsästhetik aufeinandertreffen.
Für die Secession hat sie einen neuen Film produziert, der auf Yoko Onos und John Lennons Film Rape von 1968 basiert. Die filmische Vorlage, in der eine junge Frau vom Kameramann durch die Londoner Innenstadt und in ihrer Wohnung verfolgt wird, hat Rukschcio mit den exakt gleichen Kameraeinstellungen an den Originalschauplätzen nachgedreht, jedoch ohne Protagonistin. Durch diese Verschiebung eröffnen sich eine Reihe von Fragen nach dem Zusammenhang von Kamerasprache, Blickregime, Gewalt, aber auch nach Orten als kollektive Speicher von Erinnerungen.

A reflection concerning the notion of time inherent in photographic works from old to contemporary photos. Proposed by the Association LʼAgrandisseur and conceived by Anne Immeli, with contemporary photos by Raymonde April, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, François Deladerrière, Pierre Filliquet, Aurélien Froment, Angela Grauerholz, Suzanne Lafont, Eric Nehr, Bernard Plossu, Fiona Rukschcio and old photos by Auguste Bartholdi, Adolphe Braun and Henri Ziegler. Photography involves a special relationship to the ephemeral and the static. The relation to time is created at the moment the picture is taken, but also when photos are placed side by side, as in an archive. By juxapposing 19th century and contemporary photos, the exhibition intends, starting from topics related to the temporality of photography, to highlight the different photographic aesthetics, overlapping but possibly also opposing each other, independently from a historical point of view. At the same time the photos bear witness to the way in which photographers see the world. The exhibition will be accompanied by several related activities. (Translation: Birgit and Steve Ball)

Par la mise en regard de photographies du 19e s. et de photographies du temps présent, l’exposition propose de confronter des esthétiques photographiques qui peuvent se rejoindre et se répondre, indépendamment d’un regard historique, à partir de thématiques liées aux temporalités de la photographie. Les photographies sont autant de témoignages de la manière d’habiter le monde pour les photographes. L’exposition s’accompagne de nombreuses animations.
